Hebrews 11:2

For by it the people of old ¹  received God’s commendation. ² 

This is what the ancients were commended for.

For by it the men of old gained approval.

God gave his approval to people in days of old because of their faith.

The act of faith is what distinguished our ancestors, set them above the crowd.

For by it our fathers had God’s approval.

Indeed, by faith our ancestors received approval.

For by it the elders obtained a good testimony.

For by it the people of old ¹  received God’s commendation. ² 

¹ tn Or “the elders,” “the ancients.”

² tn Grk “were attested,” “received commendation”; and Heb 11:4-6 shows this to be from God.
