Genesis 8:2

The fountains of the deep and the floodgates of heaven were closed, ¹  and the rain stopped falling from the sky.

Now the springs of the deep and the floodgates of the heavens had been closed, and the rain had stopped falling from the sky.

Also the fountains of the deep and the floodgates of the sky were closed, and the rain from the sky was restrained;

The underground water sources ceased their gushing, and the torrential rains stopped.

The underground springs were shut off, the windows of Heaven closed and the rain quit.

And the fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were shut, and the rain from heaven was stopped.

The fountains of the deep and the windows of heaven were also stopped, and the rain from heaven was restrained.

¹ tn Some (e.g., NIV) translate the preterite verb forms in this verse as past perfects (e.g., “had been closed”), for it seems likely that the sources of the water would have stopped before the waters receded.
