Galatians 1:14

I ¹  was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my nation, ²  and was ³  extremely zealous for the traditions of my ancestors. ⁴ 

I was advancing in Judaism beyond many Jews of my own age and was extremely zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

and I was advancing in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries among my countrymen, being more extremely zealous for my ancestral traditions.

I was one of the most religious Jews of my own age, and I tried as hard as possible to follow all the old traditions of my religion.

I was so enthusiastic about the traditions of my ancestors that I advanced head and shoulders above my peers in my career.

And I went farther in the Jews’ religion than a number of my generation among my countrymen, having a more burning interest in the beliefs handed down from my fathers.

I advanced in Judaism beyond many among my people of the same age, for I was far more zealous for the traditions of my ancestors.

And I advanced in Judaism beyond many of my contemporaries in my own nation, being more exceedingly zealous for the traditions of my fathers.

¹ tn Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation. Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

² tn Or “among my race.”

³ tn Grk “was advancing beyond…nation, being.” The participle ὑπάρχων (Juparcwn) was translated as a finite verb due to requirements of contemporary English style.

⁴ sn The traditions of my ancestors refers to both Pharisaic and popular teachings of this time which eventually were codified in Jewish literature such as the Mishnah, Midrashim, and Targums.
