1 Corinthians 14:4

The one who speaks in a tongue builds himself up, ¹  but the one who prophesies builds up the church.

He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

A person who speaks in tongues is strengthened personally in the Lord, but one who speaks a word of prophecy strengthens the entire church.

The one who prays using a private "prayer language" certainly gets a lot out of it, but proclaiming God's truth to the church in its common language brings the whole church into growth and strength.

He who makes use of tongues may do good to himself; but he who gives the prophet’s word does good to the church.

Those who speak in a tongue build up themselves, but those who prophesy build up the church.
