Its back ¹  has rows of shields, shut up closely ²  together as with a seal;

The ropes of Sheol ¹  tightened around me; ²  the snares of death trapped me. ³ 

The waves ¹  of death engulfed me, the currents ²  of chaos ³  overwhelmed me. ⁴

Now Jericho ¹  was shut tightly ²  because of the Israelites. No one was allowed to leave or enter. ³

Take a man’s ¹  garment ²  when he has given security for a stranger, ³  and when he gives surety for strangers, ⁴  hold him ⁵  in pledge.

Look, the Lord will throw you far away, ¹  you mere man! ²  He will wrap you up tightly. ³
