It is an honor for a person ¹  to cease ²  from strife, but every fool quarrels. ³ 

Starting a quarrel ¹  is like letting out water; ²  stop it before strife breaks out! ³ 

the herdsmen of Gerar quarreled ¹  with Isaac’s herdsmen, saying, “The water belongs to us!” So Isaac ²  named the well ³  Esek ⁴  because they argued with him about it. ⁵ 

His servants ¹  dug another well, but they quarreled over it too, so Isaac named it ²  Sitnah. ³ 

But avoid foolish controversies, genealogies, ¹  quarrels, and fights about the law, ²  because they are useless and empty.

Where there is no wood, a fire goes out, and where there is no gossip, ¹  contention ceases. ² 

He will not quarrel or cry out, nor will anyone hear his voice in the streets.

But reject foolish and ignorant ¹  controversies, because you know they breed infighting. ² 

“If men fight, and one strikes his neighbor with a stone or with his fist and he does not die, but must remain in bed, ¹ 

Where do the conflicts and where ¹  do the quarrels among you come from? Is it not from this, ²  from your passions that battle inside you? ³ 

Drive out the scorner ¹  and contention will leave; strife and insults will cease. ² 

So the people contended ¹  with Moses, and they said, “Give us water to drink!” ²  Moses said to them, “Why do you contend ³  with me? Why do you test ⁴  the Lord?”

Then he sent his brothers on their way and they left. He said to them, “As you travel don’t be overcome with fear.” ¹ 

He called the name of the place Massah and Meribah, because of the contending of the Israelites and because of their testing the Lord, ¹  saying, “Is the Lord among us or not?”

Like one who grabs a wild dog by the ears, ¹  so is the person passing by who becomes furious ²  over a quarrel not his own.

Then he moved away from there and dug another well. They did not quarrel over it, so Isaac ¹  named it ²  Rehoboth, ³  saying, “For now the Lord has made room for us, and we will prosper in the land.”

For members of Chloe’s household have made it clear to me, my brothers and sisters, ¹  that there are quarrels ²  among you.

These are the waters of Meribah, because the Israelites contended with the Lord, and his holiness was maintained ¹  among them.

The one who loves a quarrel loves transgression; ¹  whoever builds his gate high seeks destruction. ² 

They must not slander ¹  anyone, but be peaceable, gentle, showing complete courtesy to all people.
