Have I not wept for the unfortunate? ¹  Was not my soul grieved for the poor?

Although it grieved the king, ¹  because of his oath and the dinner guests he commanded it to be given.

He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.”

But Absalom fled and went to King Talmai son of Ammihud of Geshur. And David ¹  grieved over his son every day.

Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.”

Although it grieved the king deeply, ¹  he did not want to reject her request because of his oath and his guests.

David was very upset, for the men ¹  were thinking of stoning him; ²  each man grieved bitterly ³  over his sons and daughters. But David drew strength from the Lord his God.

So the victory of that day was turned to mourning as far as all the people were concerned. For the people heard on that day, “The king is grieved over his son.”

This is because you have disheartened the righteous person with lies (although I have not grieved him), and because you have encouraged the wicked person not to turn from his evil conduct and preserve his life.

After looking around ¹  at them in anger, grieved by the hardness of their hearts, ²  he said to the man, “Stretch out your hand.” He stretched it out, and his hand was restored. ³ 

But the Lord ¹  struck down some of the people of Beth Shemesh because they had looked into the ark of the Lord; he struck down 50,070 ²  of the men. The people grieved because the Lord had struck the people with a hard blow.
