He lies in ambush in a hidden place, like a lion in a thicket; ¹  he lies in ambush, waiting to catch ²  the oppressed; he catches the oppressed ³  by pulling in his net. ⁴ 

The fatherless child is snatched ¹  from the breast, ²  the infant of the poor is taken as a pledge. ³ 

But if they are bound in chains, ¹  and held captive by the cords of affliction,

He delivers the afflicted by ¹  their ²  afflictions, he reveals himself to them ³  by their suffering.

You want to humiliate the oppressed, ¹  even though ²  the Lord is their ³  shelter.

Defend the cause of the poor and the fatherless! ¹  Vindicate the oppressed and suffering!

They sat in utter darkness, ¹  bound in painful iron chains, ² 

It is trampled underfoot by the feet of the oppressed, by the soles of the poor.”

א (Alef) ¹  I am the man ²  who has experienced ³  affliction from the rod ⁴  of his wrath.

If the person is poor you may not use what he gives you as security for a covering. ¹ 

You deliver oppressed ¹  people, but you watch the proud and bring them down. ² 

for I rescued the poor who cried out for help, and the orphan who ¹  had no one to assist him;

“And now my soul pours itself out within me; ¹  days of suffering take hold of me.

My heart ¹  is in turmoil ²  unceasingly; ³  the days of my affliction confront me.

The wicked arrogantly chase the oppressed; ¹  the oppressed are trapped ²  by the schemes the wicked have dreamed up. ³ 

I am oppressed and suffering! O God, deliver and protect me! ¹ 

Do not let the afflicted be turned back in shame! Let the oppressed and poor praise your name! ¹ 

I am oppressed and have been on the verge of death since my youth. ¹  I have been subjected to your horrors and am numb with pain. ² 

For I am oppressed and needy, and my heart beats violently within me. ¹ 

All the days ¹  of the afflicted ²  are bad, ³  but one with ⁴  a cheerful heart has a continual feast. ⁵
