And another man ¹  dies in bitterness of soul, ²  never having tasted ³  anything good.

Protect me from ¹  the wicked men who attack ²  me, my enemies who crowd around me for the kill. ³ 

Do not turn me over to my enemies, ¹  for false witnesses who want to destroy me testify against me. ² 

May the Lord protect him and save his life! ¹  May he be blessed ²  in the land! Do not turn him over ³  to his enemies! ⁴

“‘Any man ¹  from the house of Israel or from the foreigners who reside ²  in their ³  midst who eats any blood, I will set my face against that person who eats the blood, and I will cut him off from the midst of his people, ⁴ 

Anyone who touches the corpse of any dead person and does not purify himself defiles the tabernacle of the Lord. And that person must be cut off from Israel, ¹  because the water of purification was not sprinkled on him. He will be unclean; his uncleanness remains on him.

So they cried out to the Lord, “Oh, please, Lord, don’t let us die on account of this man! Don’t hold us guilty of shedding innocent blood. ¹  After all, you, Lord, have done just as you pleased.” ² 

Now the entire family has risen up against your servant, saying, ‘Turn over the one who struck down his brother, so that we can execute him and avenge the death ¹  of his brother whom he killed. In so doing we will also destroy the heir.’ They want to extinguish my remaining coal, ²  leaving no one on the face of the earth to carry on the name of my husband.”
