One who beats an animal to death ¹  must make restitution for it, life for life. ² 

But if there is serious injury, then you will give a life for a life,

I will fully satisfy the needs of those who are weary and fully refresh the souls of those who are faint. ¹ 

All the people ¹  who were directly descended ²  from Jacob numbered seventy. ³  But Joseph was already in Egypt, ⁴ 

Give strong drink to the one who is perishing, ¹  and wine to those who are bitterly distressed; ² 

This is the law ¹  of the land animals, the birds, all the living creatures that move in the water, and all the creatures ²  that swarm on the land,

When Reuben heard this, he rescued Joseph ¹  from their hands, ²  saying, ³  “Let’s not take his life!” ⁴ 

“‘If a man beats any person to death, ¹  he must be put to death.

“‘Whoever touches ¹  the corpse ²  of any person ³  will be ceremonially unclean ⁴  seven days.

One must not take either lower or upper millstones as security on a loan, for that is like taking a life itself as security. ¹ 

She was very upset ¹  as she prayed to the Lord, and she was weeping uncontrollably. ² 

“Why does God ²  give ³  light to one who is in misery, ⁴  and life to those ⁵  whose soul is bitter,

Make your servant ¹  glad, for to you, O Lord, I pray! ² 

They conspire against ¹  the blameless, ²  and condemn to death the innocent. ³ 

For he has satisfied those who thirst, ¹  and those who hunger he has filled with food. ² 

The Lord satisfies ¹  the appetite ²  of the righteous, but he thwarts ³  the craving ⁴  of the wicked.

A generous person ¹  will be enriched, ²  and the one who provides water ³  for others ⁴  will himself be satisfied. ⁵ 

A righteous person cares for ¹  the life of his animal, but even the most compassionate acts ²  of the wicked are cruel.

The ransom ¹  of a person’s ²  life is his wealth, but the poor person hears no threat. ³ 

A laborer’s ¹  appetite ²  works on his behalf, ³  for his hunger ⁴  urges him to work. ⁵
