The heavens and the earth ¹  were completed with everything that was in them. ² 

The heavens belong to the Lord, ¹  but the earth he has given to mankind. ² 

A generation comes ¹  and a generation goes, ²  but the earth remains ³  the same ⁴  through the ages. ⁵ 

This is the account ¹  of the heavens and the earth ²  when they were created – when the Lord God ³  made the earth and heavens. ⁴ 

You may live ¹  among us, and the land will be open to you. ²  Live in it, travel freely in it, ³  and acquire property in it.”

The land must not be sold without reclaim ¹  because the land belongs to me, for you are foreigners and residents with me. ² 

The ¹  sky ²  above your heads will be bronze and the earth beneath you iron.

The earth is defiled by ¹  its inhabitants, ²  for they have violated laws, disregarded the regulation, ³  and broken the permanent treaty. ⁴ 

The inhabited towns will be left in ruins and the land will be devastated. Then you will know that I am the Lord.’”

You rely ¹  on your swords and commit abominable deeds; each of you defiles his neighbor’s wife. Will you possess the land?’

The desolate land will be plowed, instead of being desolate in the sight of everyone who passes by.

This is why the sky ¹  has held back its dew and the earth its produce. ² 

Now ¹  the earth ²  was without shape and empty, ³  and darkness ⁴  was over the surface of the watery deep, ⁵  but the Spirit of God ⁶  was moving ⁷  over the surface ⁸  of the water. ⁹ 

I will remember my covenant with Jacob and also my covenant with Isaac and also my covenant with Abraham, ¹  and I will remember the land.

Instead, the land you are crossing the Jordan to occupy ¹  is one of hills and valleys, a land that drinks in water from the rains, ² 

When Joshua was very old, ¹  the Lord told him, “You are very old, and a great deal of land remains to be conquered.

the territory of Byblos ¹  and all Lebanon to the east, from Baal Gad below Mount Hermon to Lebo Hamath. ² 

(Hebron used to be called Kiriath Arba. Arba was a famous Anakite. ¹ ) Then the land was free of war.

The entire Israelite community assembled at Shiloh and there they set up the tent of meeting. ¹  Though they had subdued the land, ² 

The men of the city said to Elisha, “Look, the city has a good location, as our ¹  master can see. But the water is bad and the land doesn’t produce crops.” ²
