The judge ¹  may sentence him to forty blows, ²  but no more. If he is struck with more than these, you might view your fellow Israelite ³  with contempt.

But the righteous man holds to his way, and the one with clean hands grows stronger. ¹ 

I asked, ¹  “Will the Lord reject me forever? Will he never again show me his favor?

How will he severely punish you, you deceptive talker? ¹ 

The one who is wise in heart ¹  is called ²  discerning, and kind speech ³  increases persuasiveness. ⁴ 

A wise person’s heart ¹  makes his speech wise ²  and it adds persuasiveness ³  to his words. ⁴ 

Wealth adds many friends, but a poor person is separated ¹  from his friend. ² 

The king said, “Bring to me whoever speaks to you, and he won’t bother you again!”

For he adds transgression ¹  to his sin; in our midst he claps his hands, ²  and multiplies his words against God.”

Wherever you die, I will die – and there I will be buried. May the Lord punish me severely if I do not keep my promise! ¹  Only death will be able to separate me from you!” ² 

God will severely punish David, ¹  if I leave alive until morning even one male ²  from all those who belong to him!”

God will severely judge Abner ¹  if I do not do for David exactly what the Lord has promised him, ² 

But if my father intends to do you harm, may the Lord do all this and more to Jonathan, if I don’t let you know ¹  and send word to you so you can go safely on your way. ²  May the Lord be with you, as he was with my father.

Then all the people came and encouraged David to eat food while it was still day. But David took an oath saying, “God will punish me severely ¹  if I taste bread or anything whatsoever before the sun sets!”
