What follows is the account of Esau (also known as Edom). ¹ 

It includes ¹  the tents of Edom and the Ishmaelites, Moab and the Hagrites, ² 

chief Magdiel, chief Iram. These were the chiefs of Edom, according to their settlements ¹  in the land they possessed. This was Esau, the father of the Edomites.

So Esau (also known as Edom) lived in the hill country of Seir. ¹

These were the sons of Esau (also known as Edom), and these were their chiefs.

They traveled from Kadesh and camped in Mount Hor at the edge of the land of Edom.

Magdiel, Iram. ¹  These were the tribal chiefs of Edom.

Jacob sent messengers on ahead ¹  to his brother Esau in the land of Seir, the region ²  of Edom.

Dishon, Ezer, and Dishan. These were the chiefs of the Horites, the descendants ¹  of Seir in the land of Edom.

These were the kings who reigned in the land of Edom before any king ruled over the Israelites: ¹ 

Then the chiefs of Edom will be terrified, ¹  trembling will seize ²  the leaders of Moab, and the inhabitants of Canaan will shake.

But Edom said to him, “You will not pass through me, ¹  or I will come out against ²  you with the sword.”

But he said, “You may not pass through.” Then Edom came out against them ¹  with a large and powerful force. ² 

So Edom refused to give Israel passage through his border; therefore Israel turned away from him.

Edom will be a possession, Seir, ¹  his enemies, will also be a possession; but Israel will act valiantly.

He then asked, “Which invasion route are we going to take?” ¹  Jehoram ²  answered, “By the road through the Desert of Edom.”

During his reign Edom freed themselves from Judah’s control and set up their own king. ¹
