Will it make numerous supplications to you, ¹  will it speak to you with tender words? ² 

When I was a son to my father, ¹  a tender only child ²  before my mother,

A gentle response ¹  turns away anger, but a harsh word ²  stirs up wrath. ³ 

Through patience ¹  a ruler can be persuaded, ²  and a soft tongue ³  can break a bone. ⁴

Lawless good-for-nothing men ¹  gathered around him and conspired ²  against Rehoboam son of Solomon, when Rehoboam was an inexperienced young man ³  and could not resist them.

“Fall down! Sit in the dirt, O virgin ¹  daughter Babylon! Sit on the ground, not on a throne, O daughter of the Babylonians! Indeed, ²  you will no longer be called delicate and pampered.

“‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: “‘I will take a sprig ¹  from the lofty top of the cedar and plant it. ²  I will pluck from the top one of its tender twigs; I myself will plant it on a high and lofty mountain.
