you sent widows away empty-handed, and the arms ¹  of the orphans you crushed. ² 

If you set them free, you must not send them away empty-handed.

or have wronged my ally, ¹  or helped his lawless enemy, ² 

Certainly none who rely on you will be humiliated. Those who deal in treachery will be thwarted ¹  and humiliated.

“I will grant this people favor with ¹  the Egyptians, so that when ²  you depart you will not leave empty-handed.

Now the firstling ¹  of a donkey you may redeem with a lamb, but if you do not redeem it, then break its neck. ²  You must redeem all the firstborn of your sons. “No one will appear before me empty-handed. ³

For I will rouse into action and bring against Babylon a host of mighty nations ¹  from the land of the north. They will set up their battle lines against her. They will come from the north and capture her. ²  Their arrows will be like a skilled soldier ³  who does not return from the battle empty-handed. ⁴
