The depths have covered them, ¹  they went down to the bottom ²  like a stone.

You place me in the lowest regions of the pit, ¹  in the dark places, in the watery depths.

They witnessed the acts of the Lord, his amazing feats on the deep water.

It makes the deep boil like a cauldron and stirs up the sea like a pot of ointment, ¹ 

The Lord says, “I will retrieve them ¹  from Bashan, I will bring them back from the depths of the sea,

I sink into the deep mire where there is no solid ground; ¹  I am in ²  deep water, and the current overpowers me.

You threw me ¹  into the deep waters, ²  into the middle ³  of the sea; ⁴  the ocean current ⁵  engulfed ⁶  me; all the mighty waves ⁷  you sent ⁸  swept ⁹  over me.

You will once again ¹  have mercy on us; you will conquer ²  our evil deeds; you will hurl our ³  sins into the depths of the sea. ⁴ 

You split the sea before them, and they crossed through ¹  the sea on dry ground! But you threw their pursuers ²  into the depths, like a stone into surging ³  waters.

Don’t let the current overpower me! Don’t let the deep swallow me up! Don’t let the pit ¹  devour me! ² 

The Lord ¹  will cross the sea of storms and will calm its turbulence. The depths of the Nile will dry up, the pride of Assyria will be humbled, and the domination ²  of Egypt will be no more.
