Joshua said, “Open the cave’s mouth and bring the five kings ¹  out of the cave to me.”

The field and the cave in it were acquired from the sons of Heth.” ¹ 

The five Amorite kings ¹  ran away and hid in the cave at Makkedah.

So Abraham secured the field and the cave that was in it as a burial site ¹  from the sons of Heth.

Joshua was told, “The five kings have been found hiding in the cave at Makkedah.”

Joshua said, “Roll large stones over the mouth of the cave and post guards in front of it. ¹ 

At sunset Joshua ordered his men to take them down from the trees. ¹  They threw them into the cave where they had hidden and piled large stones over the mouth of the cave. (They remain to this very day.) ² 

He came to the sheepfolds by the road, where there was a cave. Saul went into it to relieve himself. ¹  Now David and his men were sitting in the recesses of the cave.

After this Abraham buried his wife Sarah in the cave in the field of Machpelah next to Mamre (that is, Hebron) in the land of Canaan.

His sons Isaac and Ishmael buried him in the cave of Machpelah ¹  near Mamre, in the field of Ephron the son of Zohar, the Hethite.

Then he instructed them, ¹  “I am about to go ²  to my people. Bury me with my fathers in the cave in the field of Ephron the Hittite.

The men of Israel realized they had a problem because their army was hard pressed. So the army hid in caves, thickets, cliffs, strongholds, ¹  and cisterns.

So David left there and escaped to the cave of Adullam. When his brothers and the rest of his father’s family ¹  learned about it, they went down there to him.

David restrained his men with these words and did not allow them to rise up against Saul. Then Saul left the cave and started down ¹  the road.

He went into a cave there and spent the night. All of a sudden the Lord spoke to him, “Why are you here, Elijah?”
