He catches ¹  the wise in their own craftiness, ²  and the counsel of the cunning ³  is brought to a quick end. ⁴ 

But if they are bound in chains, ¹  and held captive by the cords of affliction,

when the waters become hard ¹  like stone, when the surface of the deep is frozen solid?

if ¹  you have been ensnared ²  by the words you have uttered, ³  and have been caught by the words you have spoken,
