Husbands, love your wives and do not be embittered against them.

Likewise also their wives ¹  must be dignified, not slanderous, temperate, faithful in every respect.

I ¹  persecuted this Way ²  even to the point of death, ³  tying up ⁴  both men and women and putting ⁵  them in prison,

Jesus ¹  said to them, “Moses permitted you to divorce your wives because of your hard hearts, ²  but from the beginning it was not this way.

But Saul was trying to destroy ¹  the church; entering one house after another, he dragged off ²  both men and women and put them in prison. ³ 

And I say this, brothers and sisters: ¹  The time is short. So then those who have wives should be as those who have none,

Husbands, love your ¹  wives just as Christ loved the church and gave himself for her

In the same way ¹  husbands ought to love their wives as their own bodies. He who loves his wife loves himself.

Likewise ¹  the women are to dress ²  in suitable apparel, with modesty and self-control. ³  Their adornment must not be ⁴  with braided hair and gold or pearls or expensive clothing,

and requested letters from him to the synagogues ¹  in Damascus, so that if he found any who belonged to the Way, ²  either men or women, he could bring them as prisoners ³  to Jerusalem. ⁴ 

But the Jews incited ¹  the God-fearing women of high social standing and the prominent men of the city, stirred up persecution against Paul and Barnabas, and threw them out ²  of their region.
