because you are attaining the goal of your faith – the salvation of your souls.

Whoever finds his life ¹  will lose it, ²  and whoever loses his life because of me ³  will find it.

For whoever wants to save his life ¹  will lose it, ²  but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it.

For whoever wants to save his life will lose it, ¹  but whoever loses his life for my sake will save it.

And I will say to myself, ¹  “You have plenty of goods stored up for many years; relax, eat, drink, celebrate!”’

We have come to know love by this: ¹  that Jesus ²  laid down ³  his life for us; thus we ought to lay down our lives for our fellow Christians.

What can a person give in exchange for his life?

And Mary ¹  said, ²  “My soul exalts ³  the Lord, ⁴ 

For there is more to life than food, and more to the body than clothing.

By your endurance ¹  you will gain ²  your lives. ³ 

(We were in all two hundred seventy-six ¹  persons on the ship.) ² 

Whatever you are doing, ¹  work at it with enthusiasm, ²  as to the Lord and not for people, ³ 

But we are not among those who shrink back and thus perish, but are among those who have faith and preserve their souls. ¹ 

Do ¹  not be afraid of those who kill the body ²  but cannot kill the soul. Instead, fear the one who is able to destroy both soul and body in hell. ³ 

For what does it benefit a person ¹  if he gains the whole world but forfeits his life? Or what can a person give in exchange for his life?

For whoever wants to save his life ¹  will lose it, ²  but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.

The one who loves his life ¹  destroys ²  it, and the one who hates his life in this world guards ³  it for eternal life.

Then he said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay awake with me.”

For what benefit is it for a person ¹  to gain the whole world, yet ²  forfeit his life?

He said to them, “My soul is deeply grieved, even to the point of death. Remain here and stay alert.”
