For sadness as intended by God produces a repentance that leads to salvation, leaving no regret, but worldly sadness brings about death.

In fact he became so ill that he nearly died. ¹  But God showed mercy to him – and not to him only, but also to me – so that I would not have grief on top of grief.

Instead your hearts are filled with sadness ¹  because I have said these things to you.

I have great sorrow and unceasing anguish in my heart. ¹ 

So ¹  I made up my own mind ²  not to pay you another painful visit. ³ 

For this finds God’s favor, ¹  if because of conscience toward God ²  someone endures hardships in suffering unjustly.

When ¹  he got up from prayer, he came to the disciples and found them sleeping, exhausted ²  from grief.

so that now instead ¹  you should rather forgive and comfort him. ²  This will keep him from being overwhelmed by excessive grief to the point of despair. ³ 

Each one of you should give ¹  just as he has decided in his heart, ²  not reluctantly ³  or under compulsion, ⁴  because God loves a cheerful giver.

Now all discipline seems painful at the time, not joyful. ¹  But later it produces the fruit of peace and righteousness ²  for those trained by it.

I tell you the solemn truth, ¹  you will weep ²  and wail, ³  but the world will rejoice; you will be sad, ⁴  but your sadness will turn into ⁵  joy.

When a woman gives birth, she has distress ¹  because her time ²  has come, but when her child is born, she no longer remembers the suffering because of her joy that a human being ³  has been born into the world. ⁴ 

So also you have sorrow ¹  now, but I will see you again, and your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take your joy away from you. ² 

And I wrote this very thing to you, ¹  so that when I came ²  I would not have sadness from those who ought to make me rejoice, since I am confident in you all that my joy would be yours.
