‘We played the flute for you, yet you did not dance; ¹  we wailed in mourning, ²  yet you did not weep.’

Many spread their cloaks on the road and others spread branches they had cut in the fields.

A great number of the people followed him, among them women ¹  who were mourning ²  and wailing for him.

A ¹  very large crowd spread their cloaks on the road. Others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.

Now they were all ¹  wailing and mourning ²  for her, but he said, “Stop your weeping; she is not dead but asleep.”

(Look! He is returning with the clouds, ¹  and every eye will see him, even ²  those who pierced him, ³  and all the tribes ⁴  on the earth will mourn because ⁵  of him. This will certainly come to pass! ⁶  Amen.) ⁷ 

Then ¹  the kings of the earth who committed immoral acts with her and lived in sensual luxury ²  with her will weep and wail for her when they see the smoke from the fire that burns her up. ³ 

Then ¹  the sign of the Son of Man will appear in heaven, ²  and ³  all the tribes of the earth will mourn. They ⁴  will see the Son of Man arriving on the clouds of heaven ⁵  with power and great glory.
