Consequently faith comes from what is heard, and what is heard comes through the preached word ¹  of Christ. ² 

If the whole body were an eye, what part would do the hearing? If the whole were an ear, what part would exercise the sense of smell?

At that time Herod the tetrarch ¹  heard reports about Jesus,

So ¹  the news about him spread quickly throughout all the region around Galilee.

And they will turn away from hearing the truth, but on the other hand they will turn aside to myths. ¹ 

And immediately the man’s ¹  ears were opened, his tongue loosened, and he spoke plainly.

When you hear of wars and rumors of wars, do not be alarmed. These things must happen, but the end is still to come. ¹ 

After Jesus ¹  had finished teaching all this to the people, ²  he entered Capernaum. ³ 

For you are bringing some surprising things ¹  to our ears, so we want to know what they ²  mean.”

But not all have obeyed the good news, for Isaiah says, “Lord, who has believed our report?” ¹ 

The only thing I want to learn from you is this: Did you receive the Spirit by doing the works of the law ¹  or by believing what you heard? ² 

Does God then give ¹  you the Spirit and work miracles among you by your doing the works of the law ²  or by your believing what you heard? ³ 

On this topic we have much to say ¹  and it is difficult to explain, since you have become sluggish ²  in hearing.

(for while he lived among them day after day, that righteous man was tormented in his righteous soul ¹  by the lawless deeds he saw and heard ² )

You will hear of wars and rumors of wars. Make sure that you are not alarmed, for this must happen, but the end is still to come. ¹ 

so that the word ¹  of Isaiah the prophet would be fulfilled. He said, ²  “Lord, who has believed our message, and to whom has the arm of the Lord ³  been revealed?” ⁴ 

For there will be a time when people ¹  will not tolerate sound teaching. Instead, following their own desires, ²  they will accumulate teachers for themselves, because they have an insatiable curiosity to hear new things. ³ 

For we had good news proclaimed to us just as they did. But the message they heard did them no good, since they did not join in ¹  with those who heard it in faith. ² 

So a report about him spread throughout Syria. People ¹  brought to him all who suffered with various illnesses and afflictions, those who had seizures, ²  paralytics, and those possessed by demons, ³  and he healed them.

And concerning them the prophecy of Isaiah is fulfilled that says: ‘You will listen carefully ¹  yet will never understand, you will look closely ²  yet will never comprehend.
