Since they are detestable to you, you must not eat their meat and their carcass you must detest.

“‘These you are to detest from among the birds – they must not be eaten, because they are detestable: ¹  the griffon vulture, the bearded vulture, the black vulture,

Every swarming thing that swarms on the land is detestable; it must not be eaten.

“When they return to it, they will remove from it all its detestable things and all its abominations.

But any other winged swarming thing that has four legs is detestable to you.

“‘Every winged swarming thing that walks on all fours ¹  is detestable to you.

Any creature in the water that does not have both fins and scales is detestable to you.

You must not eat any forbidden ¹  thing.

They rendered the beauty of his ornaments into pride, ¹  and with it they made their abominable images – their detestable idols. Therefore I will render it filthy to them.

Solomon worshiped ¹  the Sidonian goddess Astarte and the detestable Ammonite god Milcom. ² 

You must not eat anything that crawls ¹  on its belly or anything that walks on all fours or on any number of legs ²  of all the swarming things that swarm on the land, because they are detestable.

They will not defile themselves with their idols, their detestable things, and all their rebellious deeds. I will save them from all their unfaithfulness ¹  by which they sinned. I will purify them; they will become my people and I will become their God.

“Therefore say to the house of Israel, ‘This is what the sovereign Lord says: Will you defile yourselves like your fathers ¹  and engage in prostitution with detestable idols?

They profess to know God but with their deeds they deny him, since they are detestable, disobedient, and unfit for any good deed.
