When it rises up, the mighty are terrified, at its thrashing about they withdraw. ¹ 

On that day,” says the Lord, “a loud cry will go up ¹  from the Fish Gate, ²  wailing from the city’s newer district, ³  and a loud crash ⁴  from the hills.

They come in as through a wide breach; amid the crash ¹  they come rolling in. ² 

¹ His thunder announces the coming storm, the cattle also, concerning the storm’s approach.

Your thunderous voice was heard in the wind; the lightning bolts lit up the world; the earth trembled and shook. ¹ 

The pillars ¹  of the heavens tremble and are amazed at his rebuke. ² 

So this sin will become your downfall. You will be like a high wall that bulges and cracks and is ready to collapse; it crumbles suddenly, in a flash. ¹ 

Then ¹  there were flashes of lightning, roaring, ²  and crashes of thunder, and there was a tremendous earthquake – an earthquake unequaled since humanity ³  has been on the earth, so tremendous was that earthquake.

¹ Certainly you must have heard! ²  Long ago I worked it out, in ancient times I planned ³  it, and now I am bringing it to pass. The plan is this: Fortified cities will crash into heaps of ruins. ⁴ 

The righteous see their destruction ¹  and rejoice; the innocent mock them scornfully, ²  saying,

You calm the raging seas ¹  and their roaring waves, as well as the commotion made by the nations. ² 

The wild boars of the forest ruin it; ¹  the insects ²  of the field feed on it.

Your shout made the waters retreat; at the sound of your thunderous voice they hurried off –

The hope ¹  of the righteous is joy, but the expectation of the wicked will remain unfulfilled. ² 

Pride ¹  goes ²  before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. ³ 

I see ¹  one destruction after another taking place, so that the whole land lies in ruins. I see our ²  tents suddenly destroyed, their ³  curtains torn down in a mere instant. ⁴ 

The rain fell, the flood came, and the winds beat against that house, and it collapsed; it was utterly destroyed!” ¹ 

From ¹  the throne came out flashes of lightning and roaring ²  and crashes of thunder. Seven flaming torches, which are the seven spirits of God, ³  were burning in front of the throne

Then ¹  the angel took the censer, filled it with fire from the altar, and threw it on the earth, and there were crashes of thunder, roaring, ²  flashes of lightning, and an earthquake.

The waves of death engulfed me; the currents ¹  of chaos ²  overwhelmed me. ³
