then he reveals ¹  to them what they have done, ²  and their transgressions, that they were behaving proudly.

for you are still influenced by the flesh. ¹  For since there is still jealousy and dissension among you, are you not influenced by the flesh and behaving like unregenerate people? ² 

Now David achieved success in all he did, ¹  for the Lord was with him.

The likes of it is not on earth, a creature ¹  without fear.

When Saul saw how very successful he was, he was afraid of him.

In this way you will live ¹  a decent life before outsiders and not be in need. ² 

On every mission on which Saul sent him, David achieved success. So Saul appointed him over the men of war. This pleased not only all the army, but also Saul’s servants. ¹ 

¹  Then the leaders of the Philistines would march out, and as often as they did so, David achieved more success than all of Saul’s servants. His name was held in high esteem.

I mourned for them as I would for a friend or my brother. ¹  I bowed down ²  in sorrow as if I were mourning for my mother. ³ 

I will walk in ¹  the way of integrity. When will you come to me? I will conduct my business with integrity in the midst of my palace. ² 

You are witnesses, and so is God, as to how holy and righteous and blameless our conduct was toward you who believe.

in case I am delayed, to let you know how people ought to conduct themselves ¹  in the household of God, because it is ²  the church of the living God, the support and bulwark of the truth.

When a leader died, the next generation ¹  would again ²  act more wickedly than the previous one. ³  They would follow after other gods, worshiping them ⁴  and bowing down to them. They did not give up ⁵  their practices or their stubborn ways.

He said, “No, my brothers! Don’t act so wickedly! ¹ 

You must not worship the Lord your God the way they worship.

They invade like lumberjacks swinging their axes in a thick forest. ¹ 

Encourage younger men likewise to be self-controlled, ¹ 

“Speak to the Israelites and tell them, ‘If any man’s wife goes astray and behaves unfaithfully toward him,

Be strong! Let’s fight bravely for the sake of our people and the cities of our God! The Lord will do what he decides is best!” ¹
