For the Jews there was radiant happiness and joyous honor. ¹ 

(Now the Jewish feast of the Passover ¹  was near.) ² 

Then the chief priests of the Jews ¹  said to Pilate, “Do not write, ‘The king of the Jews,’ but rather, ‘This man said, I am king of the Jews.’”

Now ¹  at that time certain ²  Chaldeans came forward and brought malicious accusations against ³  the Jews.

They began to salute him: “Hail, king of the Jews!” ¹ 

The inscription ¹  of the charge against him read, “The king of the Jews.”

and saying, “If ¹  you are the king of the Jews, save yourself!”

There was also an inscription ¹  over him, “This is the king of the Jews.”

But the population ¹  of the city was divided; some ²  sided with the Jews, and some with the apostles.

The Jews also joined in the verbal attack, ¹  claiming ²  that these things were true.

Therefore what advantage does the Jew have, or what is the value of circumcision?

For Jews demand miraculous signs and Greeks ask for wisdom,

We are Jews by birth ¹  and not Gentile sinners, ² 

Now the Jewish feast of Tabernacles ¹  was near. ² 

In Susa the citadel the Jews killed and destroyed five hundred men.

So the Samaritan woman said to him, “How can you – a Jew ¹  – ask me, a Samaritan woman, for water ²  to drink?” (For Jews use nothing in common ³  with Samaritans.) ⁴ 

To the Jews I became like a Jew to gain the Jews. To those under the law I became like one under the law (though I myself am not under the law) ¹  to gain those under the law.

So the Jewish leaders ¹  were looking for him at the feast, asking, “Where is he?” ² 

The Jewish leaders ¹  picked up rocks again to stone him to death.

Thus the people who had come to mourn ¹  said, “Look how much he loved him!”
