Obed was the father of Jesse, and Jesse was the father of David. ¹

Boaz was the father of Obed, and Obed was the father of Jesse.

David son of Jesse reigned over all Israel.

Jesse presented seven of his sons to Samuel. ¹  But Samuel said to Jesse, “The Lord has not chosen any of these.”

Jesse was the father of Eliab, his firstborn; Abinadab was born second, Shimea third,

the son of Jesse, the son of Obed, the son of Boaz, the son of Sala, ¹  the son of Nahshon,

Then Jesse presented ¹  Shammah. But Samuel said, “The Lord has not chosen this one either.”

So Saul sent messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is out with the sheep.

A shoot will grow out of Jesse’s ¹  root stock, a bud will sprout ²  from his roots.

Salmon the father of Boaz (by Rahab), Boaz the father of Obed (by Ruth), Obed the father of Jesse,

and Jesse the father of David the king. David was the father of Solomon (by the wife of Uriah ¹ ),

¹ Now David was the son of this Ephrathite named Jesse from Bethlehem ²  in Judah. He had eight sons, and in Saul’s days he was old and well advanced in years. ³ 

Rehoboam married ¹  Mahalath the daughter of David’s son Jerimoth and of ²  Abihail, the daughter of Jesse’s son Eliab.

Then Samuel said to Jesse, “Is that all of the young men?” Jesse ¹  replied, “There is still the youngest one, but he’s taking care of the flock.” Samuel said to Jesse, “Send and get him, for we cannot turn our attention to other things until he comes here.”

The neighbor women named him, saying, “A son has been born to Naomi.” They named him Obed. ¹  Now he became the father of Jesse – David’s father!

He did not seek the Lord’s guidance, so the Lord ¹  killed him and transferred the kingdom to David son of Jesse.

Then invite Jesse to the sacrifice, and I will show you what you should do. You will anoint for me the one I point out ¹  to you.”

Then Jesse called Abinadab and presented him to Samuel. ¹  But Samuel ²  said, “The Lord has not chosen this one, either.”

So Jesse took a donkey loaded with bread, a container of wine, and a young goat ¹  and sent them to Saul with ²  his son David.
