But then the Lord awoke from his sleep; ¹  he was like a warrior in a drunken rage. ² 

When ¹  you lie down you will not be filled with fear; ²  when ³  you lie down your sleep will be pleasant. ⁴ 

Do not love sleep, ¹  lest you become impoverished; open your eyes so that ²  you might be satisfied with food. ³ 

Then they will say, ‘Under these conditions I can enjoy sweet sleep when I wake up and look around.’” ¹ 

When Joseph awoke from sleep he did what the angel of the Lord ¹  told him. He took his wife,

(Now Jesus had been talking about ¹  his death, but they ²  thought he had been talking about real sleep.) ³ 

Listen, ¹  I will tell you a mystery: We will not all sleep, ²  but we will all be changed –

Before they could lie down to sleep, ¹  all the men – both young and old, from every part of the city of Sodom – surrounded the house. ² 

so man lies down and does not rise; until the heavens are no more, ¹  they ²  will not awake nor arise from their sleep.

May your mouth ¹  be like the best wine, flowing smoothly for my beloved, gliding gently over our lips as we sleep together. ² 

None tire or stumble, they don’t stop to nap or sleep. They don’t loosen their belts, or unstrap their sandals to rest. ¹ 

For the Lord has poured out on you a strong urge to sleep deeply. ¹  He has shut your eyes (the prophets), and covered your heads (the seers).

Then the king departed to his palace. But he spent the night without eating, and no diversions ¹  were brought to him. He was unable to sleep. ² 

I listened to his voice, ¹  and as I did so ²  I fell into a trance-like sleep with my face to the ground.

Many of those who sleep in the dusty ground will awake – some to everlasting life, and others to shame and everlasting abhorrence. ¹ 

The angelic messenger ¹  who had been speaking with me then returned and woke me, as a person is wakened from sleep.

He goes to sleep and gets up, night and day, and the seed sprouts and grows, though he does not know how.

So the Lord God caused the man to fall into a deep sleep, ¹  and while he was asleep, ²  he took part of the man’s side ³  and closed up the place with flesh. ⁴ 

for it is his only covering – it is his garment for his body. ¹  What else can he sleep in? ²  And ³  when he cries out to me, I will hear, for I am gracious.

I will grant peace in the land so that ¹  you will lie down to sleep without anyone terrifying you. ²  I will remove harmful animals ³  from the land, and no sword of war ⁴  will pass through your land.
