They must not slander ¹  anyone, but be peaceable, gentle, showing complete courtesy to all people.

Once ¹  when Jesus ²  was praying ³  by himself, and his disciples were nearby, he asked them, ⁴  “Who do the crowds say that I am?” ⁵ 

The same day Sadducees ¹  (who say there is no resurrection) ²  came to him and asked him, ³ 

Sadducees ¹  (who say there is no resurrection) ²  also came to him and asked him, ³ 

You have heard the blasphemy! What is your verdict?” ¹  They all condemned him as deserving death.

While ¹  they were there, the time came for her to deliver her child. ² 

Whoever does not carry his own cross ¹  and follow ²  me cannot be my disciple.

Now some Sadducees ¹  (who contend that there is no resurrection) ²  came to him.

All were astounded and greatly confused, saying to one another, “What does this mean?”

For you are bringing some surprising things ¹  to our ears, so we want to know what they ²  mean.”

and because he worked at the same trade, he stayed with them and worked with them ¹  (for they were tentmakers ²  by trade). ³ 

for he refuted the Jews vigorously ¹  in public debate, ²  demonstrating from the scriptures that the Christ ³  was Jesus. ⁴ 

(For the Sadducees say there is no resurrection, or angel, or spirit, but the Pharisees acknowledge them all.) ¹ 

What then? Are we better off? Certainly not, for we have already charged that Jews and Greeks alike are all under sin,

So you too consider yourselves ¹  dead to sin, but ²  alive to God in Christ Jesus.

Because of the impending crisis I think it best for you to remain as you are.

And I want you to be free from concern. An unmarried man is concerned about the things of the Lord, how to please the Lord.

These things happened as examples for us, so that we will not crave evil things as they did.

If anyone intends to quarrel about this, we have no other practice, nor do the churches of God.

For there must in fact be divisions among you, so that those of you who are approved may be evident. ¹
