He said, “If you will diligently obey ¹  the Lord your God, and do what is right ²  in his sight, and pay attention ³  to his commandments, and keep all his statutes, then all ⁴  the diseases ⁵  that I brought on the Egyptians I will not bring on you, for I, the Lord, am your healer.” ⁶ 

“Every seven years each of you must free any fellow Hebrews who have sold themselves to you. After they have served you for six years, you shall set them free.” ¹  But your ancestors did not obey me or pay any attention to me.

I sent all my servants the prophets to warn you over and over again. They said, “Every one of you, stop doing the evil things you have been doing and do what is right. ¹  Do not pay allegiance to other gods ²  and worship them. Then you can continue to live in this land that I gave to you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay any attention or listen to me.

¹ Moses told this ²  to the Israelites, but they did not listen to him ³  because of their discouragement ⁴  and hard labor.

So the Lord said to Moses, “See, I have made you like God ¹  to Pharaoh, and your brother Aaron will be your prophet. ² 

Moses brought the people out of the camp to meet God, and they took their place at the foot of the mountain.

I will not drive them out before you in one year, lest the land become desolate and the wild animals ¹  multiply against you.

I will turn to you, make you fruitful, multiply you, and maintain ¹  my covenant with you.

“‘If, in spite of all these things, ¹  you do not obey me, I will discipline you seven times more on account of your sins. ² 

But they dared ¹  to go up to the crest of the hill, although ²  neither the ark of the covenant of the Lord nor Moses departed from the camp.

I spoke to you, but you did not listen. Instead you rebelled against the Lord ¹  and recklessly went up to the hill country.

Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob; ignore the stubbornness, wickedness, and sin of these people.

You must not give in to him or even listen to him; do not feel sympathy for him or spare him or cover up for him.

I will personally hold responsible ¹  anyone who then pays no attention to the words that prophet ²  speaks in my name.

Then Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people: “Pay attention to all the commandments ¹  I am giving ²  you today.

Any man who rebels against what you say and does not obey all your commands will be executed. ¹  But ²  be strong and brave!”

The Lord said to Samuel, “Look! I am about to do something in Israel; ¹  when anyone hears about it, both of his ears will tingle.

But the people refused to heed Samuel’s warning. ¹  Instead they said, “No! There will be a king over us!

Then Mephibosheth ¹  bowed and said, “Of what importance am I, your servant, that you show regard for a dead dog like me?” ² 

But Rehoboam rejected their advice and consulted the young advisers who served him, with whom he had grown up. ¹
