Revelation 5:9

5:9 They were singing a new song: 1 

“You are worthy to take the scroll

and to open its seals

because you were killed, 2 

and at the cost of your own blood 3  you have purchased 4  for God

persons 5  from every tribe, language, 6  people, and nation.

6:11 Each 7  of them was given a long white robe and they were told to rest for a little longer, until the full number was reached 8  of both their fellow servants 9  and their brothers who were going to be killed just as they had been.

20:12 And I saw the dead, the great and the small, standing before the throne. Then 12  books were opened, and another book was opened – the book of life. 13  So 14  the dead were judged by what was written in the books, according to their deeds. 15

3 tn The preposition ἐν (en) is taken to indicate price here, like the Hebrew preposition ב (bet) does at times. BDAG 329 s.v. ἐν 5.b states, “The ἐν which takes the place of the gen. of price is also instrumental ἠγόρασας ἐν τῷ αἵματί σου Rv 5:9 (cp. 1 Ch 21:24 ἀγοράζω ἐν ἀργυρίῳ).”

4 tc The Greek text as it stands above (i.e., the reading τῷ θεῷ [tw qew] alone) is found in codex A. א 2050 2344 Ï sy add the term “us” (ἡμᾶς, Jhmas), either before or after τῷ θεῷ, as an attempt to clarify the object of “purchased” (ἠγόρασας, hgorasa"). A few mss (1 vgms) delete the reference to God altogether and simply replace it with “us” (ἡμᾶς). This too is an attempt to remove ambiguity in the phrase and provide an object for “purchased.” The shorter reading, supported by the best witness for Revelation, best accounts for the other readings.

5 tn The word “persons” is not in the Greek text, but is implied. Direct objects were often omitted in Greek when clear from the context.

6 tn Grk “and language,” but καί (kai) has not been translated since English normally uses a coordinating conjunction only between the last two elements in a series of three or more.

7 tn Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

8 tn Grk “until they had been completed.” The idea of a certain “number” of people is implied by the subject of πληρωθῶσιν (plhrwqwsin).

9 tn Though σύνδουλος (sundoulos) has been translated “fellow servant,” the word does not bear the connotation of a free individual serving another. See the note on the word “servants” in 1:1.

10 tn Or “all the Gentiles” (the same Greek word may be translated “Gentiles” or “nations”).

11 tn On the term φαρμακεία (farmakeia, “magic spells”) see L&N 53.100: “the use of magic, often involving drugs and the casting of spells upon people – ‘to practice magic, to cast spells upon, to engage in sorcery, magic, sorcery.’ φαρμακεία: ἐν τῇ φαρμακείᾳ σου ἐπλανήθησαν πάντα τὰ ἔθνη ‘with your magic spells you deceived all the peoples (of the world)’ Re 18:23.”

12 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the vision.
