Revelation 14:1

Context
An Interlude: The Song of the 144,000

Revelation 14:3

Context
14:3 and they were singing a new song before the throne and before the four living creatures and the elders. No 9  one was able to learn the song except the one hundred and forty-four thousand who had been redeemed from the earth.

1 tn Here the measurement was kept in cubits in the translation because of the possible symbolic significance of the number 144 (12 times 12). This is about 216 ft (65 m).

2 tn Here L&N 81.1 translate the phrase μέτρον ἀνθρώπου, ὅ ἐστιν ἀγγέλου (metron anqrwpou, {o estin angelou) “‘the unit of measurement used by a person, that is, by an angel’ Re 21:17.” It is more likely that μέτρον is an accusative of respect or reference.

3 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the introduction of new but related material.

4 tn Grk “who were sealed.”

5 tn Normally, “every,” but since 144,000 is the total number, “all” is clearer here.

6 tn Grk “the sons of Israel,” normally an idiom for the Israelites as an ethnic entity (L&N 11.58). However, many scholars understand the expression in this context to refer to Christians rather than ethnic Israelites.

7 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence within the narrative.

8 tn The phrase “and here was” expresses the sense of καὶ ἰδού (kai idou).

9 tn Grk “elders, and no one.” This is a continuation of the previous sentence in the Greek text, but because of the length and complexity of the sentence a new sentence was started here in the translation.
