Psalms 80:10

Context

80:10 The mountains were covered by its shadow,

the highest cedars 1  by its branches.

Psalms 144:4

Context

144:4 People 2  are like a vapor,

their days like a shadow that disappears. 3 

1 tn Heb “cedars of God.” The divine name אֵל (’al, “God”) is here used in an idiomatic manner to indicate the superlative.

2 tn Heb “man,” or “mankind.”

3 tn Heb “his days [are] like a shadow that passes away,” that is, like a late afternoon shadow made by the descending sun that will soon be swallowed up by complete darkness. See Ps 102:11.
