Psalms 18:50

Context

18:50 He 2  gives his chosen king magnificent victories; 3

he is faithful 4  to his chosen ruler, 5

to David and his descendants 6  forever.” 7

Psalms 73:26

Context

73:26 My flesh and my heart may grow weak, 8

but God always 9  protects my heart and gives me stability. 10

1 tn Heb “and he conceives harm and gives birth to a lie.”

sn Pregnant with wickedness…gives birth to harmful lies. The psalmist metaphorically pictures the typical sinner as a pregnant woman, who is ready to give birth to wicked, destructive schemes and actions.

2 tn Or “the one who.”

3 tn Heb “magnifies the victories of his king.” “His king” refers to the psalmist, the Davidic king whom God has chosen to rule Israel.

4 tn Heb “[the one who] does loyalty.”

5 tn Heb “his anointed [one],” i.e., the psalmist/Davidic king. See Ps 2:2.

6 tn Or “offspring”; Heb “seed.”

7 sn If David is the author of the psalm (see the superscription), then he here anticipates that God will continue to demonstrate loyalty to his descendants who succeed him. If the author is a later Davidic king, then he views the divine favor he has experienced as the outworking of God’s faithful promises to David his ancestor.

8 tn The Hebrew verb כָלָה (khalah, “to fail; to grow weak”) does not refer here to physical death per se, but to the physical weakness that sometimes precedes death (see Job 33:21; Pss 71:9; 143:7; Prov 5:11).

9 tn Or “forever.”

10 tn Heb “is the rocky summit of my heart and my portion.” The psalmist compares the Lord to a rocky summit where one could go for protection and to landed property, which was foundational to economic stability in ancient Israel.
