Psalms 92:1

Context
Psalm 92 13

A psalm; a song for the Sabbath day.

92:1 It is fitting 14  to thank the Lord,

and to sing praises to your name, O sovereign One! 15

1 sn The reference to a thank-offering recalls the earlier statement made in v. 14. Gratitude characterizes genuine worship.

2 tn Heb “and [to one who] sets a way I will show the deliverance of God.” Elsewhere the phrase “set a way” simply means “to travel” (see Gen 30:36; cf. NRSV). The present translation assumes an emendation of וְשָׂם דֶּרֶךְ (vÿsam derekh) to וְשֹׁמֵר דְּרָכַּי (vÿshomer dÿrakhay, “and [the one who] keeps my ways” [i.e., commands, see Pss 18:21; 37:34). Another option is to read וְשֹׁמֵר דַּרְכּוֹ (vÿshomer darko, “and [the one who] guards his way,” i.e., “the one who is careful to follow a godly lifestyle”; see Ps 39:1).

3 tn Or, hyperbolically, “forever.”

4 tn Or “for.”

5 tn Heb “you have acted.” The perfect verbal form (1) probably indicates a future perfect here. The psalmist promises to give thanks when the expected vindication has been accomplished. Other options include (2) a generalizing (“for you act”) or (3) rhetorical (“for you will act”) use.

6 tn Or “wait.”

7 tn Heb “your name.” God’s “name” refers here to his reputation and revealed character.

8 tn Heb “for it is good in front of your loyal followers.”

9 tn Heb “upon me, O God, [are] your vows.”

10 tn Heb “I will repay thank-offerings to you.”

11 tn Or (hyperbolically) “will thank you forever.”

12 tn Heb “to a generation and a generation we will report your praise.” Here “praise” stands by metonymy for the mighty acts that prompt worship. Cf. Ps 9:14.

13 sn Psalm 92. The psalmist praises God because he defeats the wicked and vindicates his loyal followers.

14 tn Or “good.”

15 tn Traditionally “O Most High.”
