Psalms 109:13

Context

109:13 May his descendants 9  be cut off! 10

May the memory of them be wiped out by the time the next generation arrives! 11

1 tn Heb “for evil men.” The conjunction כִּי (ki, “for”) relates to the exhortations in v. 8; there is no reason to be frustrated, for the evildoers will be punished in due time.

2 tn Or “cut off, removed.”

3 tn Heb “and those who wait on the Lord, they will possess the land.”

4 tn Heb “loves.” The verb “loves” is here metonymic; the Lord’s commitment to principles of justice causes him to actively promote these principles as he governs the world. The active participle describes characteristic behavior.

5 tn The imperfect verbal form draws attention to this generalizing statement.

6 tn Or “protected forever.”

7 tn Or “offspring”; Heb “seed.”

8 tn Or “cut off”; or “removed.” The perfect verbal forms in v. 28b state general truths.

9 tn Or “offspring.”

10 sn On the expression cut off see Ps 37:28.

11 tn Heb “in another generation may their name be wiped out.”
