Psalms 31:10

Context

31:10 For my life nears its end in pain;

my years draw to a close as I groan. 1

My strength fails me because of 2  my sin,

and my bones become brittle. 3

Psalms 65:9

Context

65:9 You visit the earth and give it rain; 4

you make it rich and fertile 5

with overflowing streams full of water. 6

You provide grain for them, 7

for you prepare the earth to yield its crops. 8

Psalms 75:8

Context

75:8 For the Lord holds in his hand a cup full

of foaming wine mixed with spices, 9

and pours it out. 10

Surely all the wicked of the earth

will slurp it up and drink it to its very last drop.” 11

1 tn Heb “and my years in groaning.”

2 tn Heb “stumbles in.”

3 tn Heb “grow weak.”

4 tn The verb form is a Polel from שׁוּק (shuq, “be abundant”), a verb which appears only here and in Joel 2:24 and 3:13, where it is used in the Hiphil stem and means “overflow.”

5 tn Heb “you greatly enrich it.”

6 tn Heb “[with] a channel of God full of water.” The divine name is probably used here in a superlative sense to depict a very deep stream (“a stream fit for God,” as it were).

7 tn The pronoun apparently refers to the people of the earth, mentioned in v. 8.

8 tn Heb “for thus [referring to the provision of rain described in the first half of the verse] you prepare it.” The third feminine singular pronominal suffix attached to the verb “prepare” refers back to the “earth,” which is a feminine noun with regard to grammatical form.

9 tn Heb “for a cup [is] in the hand of the Lord, and wine foams, it is full of a spiced drink.” The noun מֶסֶךְ (mesekh) refers to a “mixture” of wine and spices.

10 tn Heb “and he pours out from this.”

11 tn Heb “surely its dregs they slurp up and drink, all the wicked of the earth.”

sn The psalmist pictures God as forcing the wicked to gulp down an intoxicating drink that will leave them stunned and vulnerable. Divine judgment is also depicted this way in Ps 60:3; Isa 51:17-23; and Hab 2:16.
