tn The prefixed verbal form is understood as a preterite, referring to the creation of the world.

sn He…established it upon the ocean currents. The description reflects ancient Israelite prescientific cosmology, which is based on outward appearances. The language also suggests that God’s creative work involved the subjugation of chaos, symbolized by the sea.

tn Heb “an evil [one] watches the godly [one] and seeks to kill him.” The singular forms are used in a representative sense; the typical evildoer and godly individual are in view. The active participles describe characteristic behavior.

tn This verb is often used of a lion’s roar, so the psalmist may be comparing the enemy to a raging, devouring lion.

 tn Heb “your meeting place.”

tn Heb “they set up their banners [as] banners.” The Hebrew noun אוֹת (’ot, “sign”) here refers to the enemy army’s battle flags and banners (see Num 2:12).

 tn Heb “built.”

sn You set up your faithfulness. This may allude to the Lord’s heavenly throne, which symbolizes his just rule and from which the Lord decrees his unconditional promises (see vv. 8, 14).

tn Traditionally “your testimonies.” The Hebrew noun עֵדוּת (’edut) refers here to the demands of God’s covenant law. See Ps 19:7.

sn The rules you set down. God’s covenant contains a clear, reliable witness to his moral character and demands.

sn Holiness refers here to God’s royal transcendence (see vv. 1-4), as well as his moral authority and perfection (see v. 5a).

tn Heb “for your house holiness is fitting, O Lord, for length of days.”

tn Heb “[the] king sent and set him free.”
