Psalms 111:9

Context

111:9 He delivered his people; 12

he ordained that his covenant be observed forever. 13

His name is holy and awesome.

1 tn Or “the one who.”

2 tn Heb “magnifies the victories of his king.” “His king” refers to the psalmist, the Davidic king whom God has chosen to rule Israel.

3 tn Heb “[the one who] does loyalty.”

4 tn Heb “his anointed [one],” i.e., the psalmist/Davidic king. See Ps 2:2.

5 tn Or “offspring”; Heb “seed.”

6 sn If David is the author of the psalm (see the superscription), then he here anticipates that God will continue to demonstrate loyalty to his descendants who succeed him. If the author is a later Davidic king, then he views the divine favor he has experienced as the outworking of God’s faithful promises to David his ancestor.

7 tn Heb “certainly his deliverance [is] near to those who fear him.”

8 tn Heb “to dwell, glory, in our land.” “Glory” is the subject of the infinitive. The infinitive with -לְ (lÿ), “to dwell,” probably indicates result here (“then”). When God delivers his people and renews his relationship with them, he will once more reveal his royal splendor in the land.

9 tn Heb “[you] mighty ones of strength, doers of his word, by listening to the voice of his word.”

10 tn Heb “all his hosts.”

11 tn Heb “his attendants, doers of his desire.”

12 tn Heb “redemption he sent for his people.”

13 tn Heb “he commanded forever his covenant.”
