Matthew 23:31

Context
23:31 By saying this you testify against yourselves that you are descendants of those who murdered the prophets.

1 tn Grk “Therefore in.” Here οὖν (oun) has not been translated.

2 tn This is a generic use of ἄνθρωπος (anqrwpo"), referring to both males and females.

3 sn Jesus’ teaching as reflected in the phrase treat others as you would want them to treat you, known generally as the Golden Rule, is not completely unique in the ancient world, but here it is stated in its most emphatic, selfless form.

4 tn Grk “is.”

5 sn Sheeps clothing…voracious wolves. Jesus uses a metaphor here to point out that these false prophets appear to be one thing, but in reality they are something quite different and dangerous.

6 sn The appearance of Elijah would mean that the end time had come. According to 2 Kgs 2:11, Elijah was still alive. In Mal 4:5 it is said that Elijah would be the precursor of Messiah.
