Matthew 15:32

Context
The Feeding of the Four Thousand

15:32 Then Jesus called the 1  disciples and said, “I have compassion on the crowd, because they have already been here with me three days and they have nothing to eat. I don’t want to send them away hungry since they may faint on the way.”

Matthew 16:21

Context
First Prediction of Jesus’ Death and Resurrection

16:21 From that time on 2  Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem 3  and suffer 4  many things at the hands of the elders, chief priests, and experts in the law, 5  and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Matthew 19:28

Context
19:28 Jesus 6  said to them, “I tell you the truth: 7  In the age when all things are renewed, 8  when the Son of Man sits on his glorious throne, you who have followed me will also sit on twelve thrones, judging 9  the twelve tribes of Israel.

Matthew 21:21

Context
21:21 Jesus 10  answered them, “I tell you the truth, 11  if you have faith and do not doubt, not only will you do what was done to the fig tree, but even if you say to this mountain, ‘Be lifted up and thrown into the sea,’ it will happen.

1 tc ‡ Although the external evidence is not great (א W Θ 700 pc), the internal evidence for the omission of αὐτοῦ (autou, “his”) after “disciples” is fairly strong. The pronoun may have been added by way of clarification. NA27, however, includes the pronoun, on the basis of the much stronger external evidence.

2 tn Grk “From then.”

3 map For location see Map5 B1; Map6 F3; Map7 E2; Map8 F2; Map10 B3; JP1 F4; JP2 F4; JP3 F4; JP4 F4.

4 sn The necessity that the Son of Man suffer is the particular point that needed emphasis since for many 1st century Jews the Messiah was a glorious and powerful figure, not a suffering one.

5 tn Or “and scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 2:4.

6 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

7 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”

8 sn The Greek term translated the age when all things are renewed (παλιγγενεσία, palingenesia) is understood as a reference to the Messianic age, the time when all things are renewed and restored (cf. Rev 21:5).

9 sn The statement you…will also sit on twelve thrones, judging the twelve tribes of Israel looks at the future authority the Twelve will have when Jesus returns. They will share in Israel’s judgment.

10 tn Grk “And answering, Jesus said.” This is somewhat redundant and has been simplified in the translation.

11 tn Grk “Truly (ἀμήν, amhn), I say to you.”
