Mark 8:23

Context
8:23 He took the blind man by the hand and brought him outside of the village. Then 1  he spit on his eyes, placed his hands on his eyes 2  and asked, “Do you see anything?”

Mark 9:18

Context
9:18 Whenever it seizes him, it throws him down, and he foams at the mouth, grinds his teeth, and becomes rigid. I asked your disciples to cast it out, but 3  they were not able to do so.” 4

Mark 12:28

Context
The Greatest Commandment

12:28 Now 5  one of the experts in the law 6  came and heard them debating. When he saw that Jesus 7  answered them well, he asked him, “Which commandment is the most important of all?”

Mark 15:43

Context
15:43 Joseph of Arimathea, a highly regarded member of the council, 8  who was himself looking forward to 9  the kingdom of God, 10  went boldly to Pilate and asked for the body of Jesus. 11

1 tn Grk “village, and.” Here καί (kai) has been translated as “then” to indicate the implied sequence of events within the narrative. Because of the length and complexity of the Greek sentence, a new sentence was started here in the translation.

2 tn Grk “on him,” but the word πάλιν in v. 25 implies that Jesus touched the man’s eyes at this point.

3 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context.

4 tn The words “to do so” are not in the Greek text, but have been supplied for clarity and stylistic reasons.

5 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “now” to indicate the transition to a new topic.

6 tn Or “One of the scribes.” See the note on the phrase “experts in the law” in 1:22.

7 tn Grk “he”; the referent (Jesus) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

8 tn Grk “a councillor” (as a member of the Sanhedrin, see L&N 11.85). This indicates that some individuals among the leaders did respond to Jesus.

9 tn Or “waiting for.”

10 sn Though some dispute that Joseph of Arimathea was a disciple of Jesus, this remark that he was looking forward to the kingdom of God and his actions regarding Jesus’ burial suggest otherwise.

11 sn Asking for the body of Jesus was indeed a bold move on the part of Joseph of Arimathea, for it clearly and openly identified him with a man who had just been condemned and executed, namely, Jesus. His faith is exemplary, especially for someone who was a member of the council that handed Jesus over for crucifixion (cf. Luke 23:51). He did this because he sought to give Jesus an honorable burial.
