Mark 15:30

Context
15:30 save yourself and come down from the cross!” 1

Mark 8:35

Context
8:35 For whoever wants to save his life 2  will lose it, 3  but whoever loses his life for my sake and for the gospel will save it.

1 sn There is rich irony in the statement of those who were passing by, “Save yourself and come down from the cross!” In summary, they wanted Jesus to come down from the cross and save his physical life, but it was indeed his staying on the cross and giving his physical life that led to the fact that they could experience a resurrection from death to life. There is a similar kind of irony in the statement made by the chief priests and experts in the law in 15:31.

2 tn Or “soul” (throughout vv. 35-37).

3 sn The point of the saying whoever wants to save his life will lose it is that if one comes to Jesus then rejection by many will certainly follow. If self-protection is a key motivation, then one will not respond to Jesus and will not be saved. One who is willing to risk rejection will respond and find true life.
