Luke 9:57

Context
Challenging Professed Followers

9:57 As 1  they were walking 2  along the road, someone said to him, “I will follow you wherever you go.” 3

Luke 10:4

Context
10:4 Do not carry 4  a money bag, 5  a traveler’s bag, 6  or sandals, and greet no one on the road. 7

Luke 24:35

Context
24:35 Then they told what had happened on the road, 8  and how they recognized him 9  when he broke the bread.

1 tn Grk “And as.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

2 tn Grk “going,” but “walking” is an accurate description of how they traveled about.

3 tc Most mss (A C W Θ Ψ Ë13 33 Ï) add κύριε (kurie, “Lord”) here, but scribes were prone to add to the text, especially appellations for the Lord. The shorter reading also enjoys significant ms support (Ì45,75 א B D L Ξ Ë1 lat co).

sn The statement “I will follow you wherever you go” is an offer to follow Jesus as a disciple, no matter what the cost.

4 sn On the command Do not carry see Luke 9:3. The travel instructions communicate a note of urgency and stand in contrast to philosophical teachers, who often took a bag. There is no ostentation in this ministry.

5 tn Traditionally, “a purse.”

6 tn Or possibly “a beggar’s bag” (L&N 6.145; BDAG 811 s.v. πήρα).

7 tn Or “no one along the way.”

8 sn Now with the recounting of what had happened on the road two sets of witnesses corroborate the women’s report.

9 tn Grk “how he was made known to them”; or “how he was recognized by them.” Here the passive construction has been converted to an active one in the translation in keeping with contemporary English style.
