Luke 9:53

Context
9:53 but the villagers 1  refused to welcome 2  him, because he was determined to go to Jerusalem. 3

Luke 10:8

Context
10:8 Whenever 4  you enter a town 5  and the people 6  welcome you, eat what is set before you.

1 tn Grk “they”; the referent (the villagers) has been specified in the translation for clarity.

2 tn Or “did not receive”; this verb, δέχομαι (decomai), is a term of hospitality or welcome (L&N 34.53).

3 tn Grk “because his face was set toward Jerusalem.”

sn Jerusalem is to be the place of rejection, as Luke 9:44 suggested. Jesus had resolved to meet his fate in Jerusalem, so the rejection was no surprise.

4 tn Grk “And whatever town you enter,” but this is more often expressed in English as “whenever you enter a town.” Here καί (kai) has not been translated because of differences between Greek and English style.

5 tn Or “city.” Jesus now speaks of the town as a whole, as he will in vv. 10-12.

6 tn Grk “and they”; the referent (the people who live in the town) has been specified in the translation for clarity.
