Luke 6:44

Context
6:44 for each tree is known 1  by its own fruit. For figs are not gathered 2  from thorns, nor are grapes picked 3  from brambles. 4

Luke 8:17

Context
8:17 For nothing is hidden 5  that will not be revealed, 6  and nothing concealed that will not be made known and brought to light.

Luke 12:39

Context
12:39 But understand this: If the owner of the house had known at what hour the thief 7  was coming, he would not have let 8  his house be broken into.

Luke 19:42

Context
19:42 saying, “If you had only known on this day, 9  even you, the things that make for peace! 10  But now they are hidden 11  from your eyes.

1 sn The principle of the passage is that one produces what one is.

2 tn Grk “they do not gather”; this has been simplified to the passive voice in the translation since the subject “they” is not specified further in the context.

3 tn This is a different verb (τρυγῶσιν, trugwsin) for gathering from the previous one (συλλέγουσιν, sullegousin).

4 tn This is a different term (βάτος, batos) for a thorn or bramble bush than the previous one (ἄκανθα, akanqa).

sn The statement nor are grapes picked from brambles illustrates the principle: That which cannot produce fruit, does not produce fruit.

5 sn Nothing is hidden. Light also exposes, and Jesus was suggesting that his teaching likewise revealed where people are and where they will be. Truth will be manifest in the future, just as it was declared by him then. Nothing will be concealed.

6 tn Or “disclosed.”

7 sn On Jesus pictured as a returning thief, see 1 Thess 5:2, 4; 2 Pet 3:10; Rev 3:3; 16:15.

8 tc Most mss (א1 A B L Q W Θ Ψ 070 Ë1,13 33 Ï lat syp,h sams bo) read “he would have watched and not let” here, but this looks like an assimilation to Matt 24:43. The alliance of two important and early mss along with a few others (Ì75 א* [D] e i sys,c samss), coupled with much stronger internal evidence, suggests that the shorter reading is authentic.

9 sn On this day. They had missed the time of Messiah’s coming; see v. 44.

10 tn Grk “the things toward peace.” This expression seems to mean “the things that would ‘lead to,’ ‘bring about,’ or ‘make for’ peace.”

11 sn But now they are hidden from your eyes. This becomes an oracle of doom in the classic OT sense; see Luke 13:31-35; 11:49-51; Jer 9:2; 13:7; 14:7. They are now blind and under judgment (Jer 15:5; Ps 122:6).
