Luke 17:8

Context
17:8 Won’t 1  the master 2  instead say to him, ‘Get my dinner ready, and make yourself ready 3  to serve me while 4  I eat and drink. Then 5  you may eat and drink’?

Luke 14:12

Context

14:12 He 6  said also to the man 7  who had invited him, “When you host a dinner or a banquet, 8  don’t invite your friends or your brothers or your relatives or rich neighbors so you can be invited by them in return and get repaid.

1 tn The question includes a Greek particle, οὐχί (ouci), that expects a positive reply. The slave is expected to prepare a meal before eating himself.

2 tn Grk “he”; the referent has been specified in the translation for clarity.

3 tn Grk “and gird yourself” (with an apron or towel, in preparation for service).

4 tn BDAG 423 s.v. ἕως 2.b, “to denote contemporaneousness as long as, while… w. subjunctive… Lk 17:8.”

5 tn Grk “after these things.”

6 tn Here δέ (de) has not been translated.

7 sn That is, the leader of the Pharisees (v. 1).

8 tn The meaning of the two terms for meals here, ἄριστον (ariston) and δεῖπνον (deipnon), essentially overlap (L&N 23.22). Translators usually try to find two terms for a meal to use as equivalents (e.g., lunch and dinner, dinner and supper, etc.). In this translation “dinner” and “banquet” have been used, since the expected presence of rich neighbors later in the verse suggests a rather more elaborate occasion than an ordinary meal.
