Luke 10:15

Context
10:15 And you, Capernaum, 1  will you be exalted to heaven? 2  No, you will be thrown down to Hades! 3

Luke 14:11

Context
14:11 For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but 4  the one who humbles 5  himself will be exalted.”

1 sn Capernaum was a town on the northwest shore of the Sea of Galilee, 680 ft (204 m) below sea level. It was a major trade and economic center in the North Galilean region.

map For location see Map1 D2; Map2 C3; Map3 B2.

2 tn The interrogative particle introducing this question expects a negative reply.

3 sn In the OT, Hades was known as Sheol. It is the place where the unrighteous will reside (Matt 11:23; Luke 16:23; Rev 20:13-14).

4 tn Here καί (kai) has been translated as “but” to indicate the contrast present in this context, which involves the reversal of expected roles.

5 sn The point of the statement the one who humbles himself will be exalted is humility and the reversal imagery used to underline it is common: Luke 1:52-53; 6:21; 10:15; 18:14.
