Context
Exhortation to Holiness and Obedience

Leviticus 26:17

Context
26:17 I will set my face against you. You will be struck down before your enemies, those who hate you will rule over you, and you will flee when there is no one pursuing you.

1 tn Heb “and the priest shall see.” The pronoun “it” is unexpressed, but it should be assumed and it refers to the infection (cf. the note on v. 8 above).

2 tn Heb “and behold” (so KJV, ASV).

3 tn Heb “and rawness [i.e., something living] of living flesh is in the swelling”; KJV, NASB, NRSV “quick raw flesh.”

4 tn Heb “and if.”

5 tn Heb “and behold” (so KJV, ASV, NASB).

6 tn Heb “and the priest will shut him up seven days.”

7 tn Heb “and if.”

8 tn Heb “and behold” (so KJV, ASV); NASB “and indeed.”

9 tn Heb “and low it is not ‘from’ (comparative מִן, min, “lower than”) the skin.” See the note on v. 20 above. Cf. TEV “not deeper than the surrounding skin.”

10 tn Heb “and the priest will shut him up seven days.”

11 tn Heb “and behold” (so KJV, ASV).

12 tn Heb “and the appearance of the scall is not deep ‘from’ (comparative מִן, min, meaning “deeper than”) the skin.”

13 tn Heb “And a man who takes a woman and her mother.” The Hebrew verb “to take” in this context means “to engage in sexual intercourse.”

14 tn Regarding “lewdness,” see the note on Lev 18:17 above.

15 tn Heb “in fire they shall burn him and them.” The active plural verb sometimes requires a passive translation (GKC 460 §144.f, g), esp. when no active plural subject has been expressed in the context. The present translation specifies “burned to death” because the traditional rendering “burnt with fire” (KJV, ASV; NASB “burned with fire”) could be understood to mean “branded” or otherwise burned, but not fatally.

16 tn Heb “And you shall keep all my statutes and all my regulations and you shall do them.” This appears to be a kind of verbal hendiadys, where the first verb is a modifier of the action of the second verb (see GKC 386 §120.d, although שָׁמַר [shamar, “to keep”] is not cited there; cf. Lev 22:31, etc.).

17 tn Heb “and.” The Hebrew conjunction ו (vav, “and”) can be considered to have resultative force here.
